The Future Minerals Initiative (FMI) brings together researchers across the social sciences, law, and related disciplines to examine mining and the institutions that govern it. Our research considers the histories and ongoing effects of extraction, with particular attention to Indigenous rights and jurisdiction, environmental justice, and the political and economic forces shaping mineral development.
Working with Indigenous partners and other communities affected by mining, we explore how laws, policies, and decision-making practices can better reflect their priorities and support self-determination. Our interests span the mining lifecycle, from exploration and assessment to closure, reclamation, and long-term stewardship. We connect critical scholarship with collaborative inquiry to inform public debate and mining governance.
FMI is a UBC Reseach Cluster funded through the Grants for Catalyzing Research Clusters program.
